1. Playing With The Leash And Collar

When you get a leash and collar for your puppy or dog, allow them to spend time with these things first without putting them on the dog. Let the dog sniff and chew the leash and collar because this is the way dogs bond with things that are new to their routine.

Let the dog play with these things for a few days until they are no longer intimidated by these things. Also, you can put the collar or leash on their stomach or bodies so that they can somewhat get used to their weight.

2. Give Treats For Good Behavior

This tip is a lifesaver. Always have treats with you on hand. Whenever you try to put the leash on the dog, and it doesn’t protest, reward the dog with treats. This will trigger their brain into thinking that this is a good thing, and they will behave the next time you put the leash or collar on them.

Even when going on walks for the first time, try to give the dog treats if the walk goes uneventful, and nothing about the collar or leash bothers the puppy.

3. Try Putting It On

Once the dog is comfortable having the leash and collar around them and keeping the weight of these items on its body, then you can try putting it on. Just put the leash or collar on and let the dog walk freely. You don’t want to start walking the dog immediately, or else there might be a lot of protest from the dog’s side.

Let the dog walk around the house as a test run with the collar on. This will give the dog an experience of what it would feel always to wear a collar, and the rest will be to walk in the park, literally.

4. Go For A Test Walk

After letting the dog or puppy get used to the leash or collar on its body for a good week, then you can try to go for a test walk.

You don’t need to do a whole lot, just go a couple of steps with the leash and see how the dog reacts. If they don’t protest, then give the dog a treat as a reward and keep going. You don’t want to go on too long walks for the first time. Take it one day at a time and see how it goes.

Conclusion

These tips are going to make training your dog so much easier. Keep a few dog collar and leash sets with you because It's very important to see how your dog reacts to these things and give it time. They will eventually get used to it.
