As we age, keeping our homes sparkling clean becomes more of a challenge. Bathroom tiles in particular take a beating and can be difficult to clean.
Over time, hard water stains, soap scum, and mildew can build up and make your tiles appear dingy no matter how much you scrub.
If you’re struggling to remove tough stains from your bathroom tiles, read on for some of my best tips after over 10 years in the senior home cleaning services industry.
A Multistep Process for Stubborn Tile Stains
Getting tiles to look like new again when they have significant staining and buildup requires patience and the right combination of cleaning methods and products.
Through trial and error cleaning hundreds of senior bathrooms over the years, I’ve developed a battle-tested process to lift even the toughest stains.
Here are the key steps I follow:
Mix a solution of warm water and tile cleaner. Spray liberally over stained areas and let sit for 5-10 minutes. This allows the cleaner time to break down stains.
Use a stiff scrub brush and scrub each tile by hand in a circular motion. Apply plenty of elbow grease here!
Rinse the tiles thoroughly with clean water to remove the dirty mixed solution.
Make a baking soda and water paste. Spread over difficult stains and let sit overnight. The baking soda will continue breaking down stains.
In the morning, mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Spread over tiles and allow to bubble on the surface for 2-3 minutes.
Scrub again with a stiff brush. The chemical reaction from the vinegar and baking soda will help lift stains.
Rinse thoroughly. Repeat steps 4-7 for very stubborn stains.
"I was amazed at how sparkling clean my 20-year-old shower tiles looked after following this process. It was some work, but worth the effort and saved me from having to re-tile my bathroom!" - Mary, 72
Which Cleaners Work Best for Tile Stains
Not all tile cleaners are created equal when it comes to removing difficult stains. Through first-hand testing, I’ve found these brand-name products work extremely well:
Zep Acidic Tile Cleaner: For general cleaning and grease removal
Lime-A-Way Bathroom Cleaner: Best for hard water and rust stains
Clorox Tilex Mold and Mildew Remover: For eliminating mold, mildew and other biological stains
I always have these three tile cleaners on hand when cleaning senior’s homes. Use the appropriate cleaner for the type of staining you’re dealing with.
When Should You Call in a Professional?
While the process I outlined can tackle most tile cleaning challenges, there are some situations where calling in a professional may be wise:
Grout lines have significant dark staining that scrubbing won’t remove
Mold or mildew growth has gotten out of control
Stains are hidden under layers of old soap scum and mineral deposits
Harsh chemical fumes are too strong
Tile cleaning pros like myself have industrial-strength cleaners, tools, and extraction equipment to handle severe stain situations.
We also have extensive experience dealing with all sorts of tile materials from ceramic, to porcelain, to natural stone.
